| | Granite Islands |
|---|
| Seychelles is composed of 115 islands whose combined landmass of only 455 square kilometres is sprinkled across 1,3million square kilometers of sea. The main islands in Seychelles are unique in that they are the only ones in the world made of granite; a result of huge shifts in the earth’s crust hundreds of millions of years ago. | | | Far from any continental land mass, the islands of Seychelles have long been likened to a string of pearls set in the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. No wonder the countries slogan is 'treasure every moment'. | | | As the world gets smaller, Seychelles is becoming increasingly accessible to travellers from around the globe. With increasing ease, Air Seychelles is carrying travellers from Europe, the Middle and Far East and Africa to sample the delights of the islands. This is a country of colourful contrasts, bleached granite rocks thrusting from the sea like peaks of a sunken mountain range, tropical vegetation clinging to steep mountainsides, clear azure waters and some of the most spectacular beaches one can imagine. | | | | The people of the islands reflect the same contrasts with the resident Seychellois tracing their heritage back to British and French seamen, freed African slaves and Indian and Chinese merchants. Wherever they come from they share a gentle and warm character reflecting the islands on which they live. | | | Mahe is the main island with Praslin and La Digue being the two other islands that are frequented by travellers the most. However the Seychelles is made up of a diverse range of islands and archipelago's, some of which are close to Mahe, whilst others are more than 1000 km's from Mahe. Aldabra, the Farquar Islands, the Amirantes, and islands such as Alphonse, offer unique experiences where the natural features of each attract those seeking the unusual. | | | | |
