Lesotho

Lesotho, Africa's tiny mountain kingdom is completely surrounded by South Africa. This is the only country in Africa where Africans have adapted to living in near Alpine conditions. Lesotho is a land of mountains, deep valleys and rural homesteads that dot the landscape. Summer brings the rain and the hills and mountains are swathed in a mantle of green grass and wild flowers. In winter snow often covers the mountains especially in the east where the Maluti Mountains rise up to meet the Drakensberg Mountains at altitudes exceeding 3000 metres.
The laid-back traditional lifestyle of the people and the breathtaking mountain scenery are the perfect backdrop for a relaxing holiday. Pony trekking and walking in the mountains, swimming in remote mountain streams and viewing the spectacular 193m high Maletsunyane Falls are some of the attractions.

Travelling in Lesotho
The road network in the lowland western areas of the country where most of the population lives is of fair quality. Once venturing into the mountains the road network deteriorates and travelling becomes quite an adventure. Regional access by air is from Johannesburg in South Africa and Mbabane in Swaziland.
